A horse trainer from Massachusetts, Jordina has remained in Connecticut to find her sweet boy. While four long weeks have passed, Jordina refuses to give up hope.

What is truly remarkable about this story is the outpouring of love from the Connecticut community and beyond. As Jordina and her husband Michael continue their search, folks world-wide have rallied to Bring Andy Home. Volunteers brought together through social media and the understanding of the love for a dog, have contributed by developing websites, fundraising, distributing flyers and in pounding the pavement day and night. Andy & Jordina continue to find themselves in the center of a growing circle of kind hearted people willing to dedicate time, money, effort, and support to reunite Andy with his “mom”.

The Bring Andy Home Facebook page currently has more than 2,100 followers and is growing daily. Andy seems so close to being reunited with his family but he continues to remain elusive. Most recent developments include a large group from "Team Andy" on a well co-ordinated overnight stakeout last Tuesday night. Searchers reported multiple sightings which led to the discovery of his den. In the following days humane traps were set up in hope of containing Andy. Unfortunately the activity seems to have spooked him and he continues to be on the run. Monday, Jordina and her team of volunteers are bringing back Salsa, a pet tracking dog from Pure Gold Pet Trackers, to aid in Andy's search.

Please help share this story. Together we can turn heartbreak into a homecoming!
https://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Bring-Andy-Home/323338351030976
http://bringandyhome.wordpress.com/

Jordina Ghiggeri can be reached at 1-781-264-5243
Michael Ghiggeri can be reached at 1-908-399-9428

New Haven food pantry for pets gets assist from Bethany Veterinary Hospital

By Bridget Albert
Register Staff
balbert@newhavenregister.com

Pets whose owners frequent the New Haven food pantry will be sleeping with full bellies thanks to a pet-food drive Bethany Veterinary Hospital held over the holidays.

A van filled to capacity recently delivered about 700 pounds of food, toys and other products for companion pets.

This is the third year Bethany Veterinary Hospital has held the food drive.

Diana Richter, executive director of the New Haven Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen, said she was very thankful for the support.

“Bethany Vet is a standout for us. They helped us launch Thunder’s Pantry (pet food bank) and they are instrumental in keeping the pantry going,” she said.

Angie Reich of Bethany Veterinary Hospital said the staff there was happy to hold the food drive.

“Anyone of us could be there,” she said. “We would really like to see the shelves stocked year round (instead of just the holidays).”

Reich said her heart broke when she learned an elderly person was taking food home for his pet and not eating himself.

Thunder’s Pantry, the pet food bank, was started three years ago when volunteers noticed an increase in requests for canned tuna. They learned that much of the food they were giving out was being eaten by their visitors’ animals.

Richter said pantry visitors were feeding their pets before themselves.

The food pantry, which is open once a week, serves 250 to 300 people per week, Richter said.

She said that about a third of those also utilize the pet food pantry.

Richter said it is not uncommon to see visitors in line with their pets.

“One man lives in the woods because he isn’t allowed to have his dog in the apartment,” she said.

Bethany Veterinary Hospital said it would be happy to be a drop-off location for the soup kitchen. Anyone wishing to drop off wet and dry food, kitty litter, toys and other pet-related items may stop by during normal hours. The hospital at 782 Amity Road (Route 63) will make sure the animal supplies are delivered in a timely manner.

The Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen is at 311 Temple St. Learn more about the soup kitchen at www.downtowneveningsoupkitchen.com.

Call Bridget Albert at 203-789-5702 and follow her on Twitter @nhrbalbert. He came to be a part of our lives when he was about two-years old. He lived with friends of ours who show dogs. So Chester was destined to be famous in the dog world.
Unfortunately (or fortunately) for Chester he did not develope anatomically correct so he did not qualify for the dog show circuit and our friends asked us if we wanted to make Chester a part of our lives.
He is an absolute angel. He is patient, kind and caring. The only times he gets impatient is when he believes it is time to go for a walk with his ‘pack.’
Yes, Chester has a group of canine and human friends he plays with regularly at the Racebrook Tract.
Chester and Baxter are best buds.
Pictured is Chester patiently letting me bandage him up for a photo op promoting a doggie first aid class. And yes he got some special treats for being so patient.

It's graduation day!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 133px; height: 200px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-sSBs-QDRjEo/TwpIh_r6hxI/AAAAAAAAAHc/IQyDW9xDqtg/s200/BaxSit.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5695444427631920914" />
Baxter graduated from Practicing the Family Basics tonight.
I am not sure if I am happy or sad.
It has been so very helpful having Kathy and her crew there week after week to answer all my dumb questions and not make me feel stupid.
Baxy has certainly come a long way.
Tonight I didn’t even have to keep him on the easy walker but just his regular collar. And he is still growing!
He still eats three times a day most days and reminds you when it is time to eat!
It almost (I am a skeptic) seems like he is beginning to listen better. He is coming when called, walks a little better on his leash and actually seems to be paying more attention to me.
That being said when I took him out this morning he practically pulled me across the yard. There were about 6 deer in the yard that I didn’t see but he sure did!
On the one hand I want to blame him for pulling but on the other he was excited and I should have paid better attention. If I had, he would have stayed inside until they had left the property.
While on vacation over the holidays Baxter spent some time at his grandmas house. Playing with all those Gt Danes should have tired him; but it didn't!
We spent some time at a friends home after picking Baxter up and he was allowed to play with their dog Abigail. They zoomed all over the yard and Baxter was leaping over obstacles including me. I am not sure how it happened but all of a sudden he was flying through the air over my shoulder and he never looked back!
While I know my obedience expectations are high for him I realize that although he is a big dog he still is a baby with lots of growing to do. In the meantime we will continue to practice his basic obedience skills and hope for the best!
Pictured in Baxters sister Wichie Woman. He is now 8-months old and as written before he has gone from being a demon boy to a devil dog!
Not all the time - but there have sure been moments.
We have what we call a ‘playpen’ in the backyard for the dogs. It is really an exercise area. They can run, play and do their business in a safe enclosure and at the same time we don’t have a yard loaded with ‘yellow spots.’
Anyway, for a good long while I was in heaven when I would call Baxy and he would stop whatever he was doing and run over to me.
Not these days.
I know good and well that he hears me. He cocks his head and goes in the other direction when I call him.
And the game of tag progresses. Eventually I will get him to come in but it really depends on how much energy he wants to expend first.
And walks are a low point to my day and a very high one for Baxter.
He enjoys them so much he bounces straight up in the air. Seriously it is like you are walking next to someone on a pogo stick! And when he sees someone he gets so excited it is hard to restrain him. And forget it if he encounters another dog …
And yes, we are in classes working on these issues. In class he does better than when he is on his own.
Baxter is also a thief. Anything made of material is fair game to him. Dish towels, doggie face towels are one of his favorites. He sneaks into the room where they are and quickly grabs one and runs back to his bed and lays there until he is caught. “Leave it’ does seem to have made its way into his brain thank goodness!
Later this month we will be going to the vet for his flu shot and an updated kennel cough shot if needed. The best part of the visit will be his weigh in. Can’t wait for the new triple digit!

<category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='Gt. Yes his weight is the in the triple digits at 104 lbs. He wouldn’t get back in the car to go home.
No matter how hard I tried, he would back away from the open car doors. Fortunately I had my cell phone so I called inside and asked for someone to bring out a treat to help lure him in. And it worked!
Note to self to ALWAYS have treats hidden in the car in case this happens again.
And it did this morning. We went for an early morning walk and he refused again. Tossing a treat into the back seat got him in thank goodness.
And we seem to have the pulling issue under control with the Easy Walk Harness. He sits to have it put on and makes the cutest little noises of excitement.
The only problem on walks in public is whenever he sees people and especially other dogs he starts jumping straight up in the air. He is such a social dog.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://ladyjaneslessons.blogspot.com/2011/11/maybe-weve-hit-plateau-hes-beginning-to.html' title='Maybe we’ve hit a plateau. She asked if she could enter him that day. AND Baxter won his first blue ribbon.
Yes, this week he is back to being The Little Prince as opposed to being Demon Dog. We know that any minute a growth spurt will overtake him and he will once again be DD. But Little Prince is nice while it lasts.
Lately Baxter has been doing a lot of dreaming. He runs, whimpers and sometimes wakes up wondering what had possessed his body. And then nobs off again.
We just bought him a gentle harness that is supposed to stop the excited pulling he sometimes does.
Later on we will fit him to it and go for a walk.
I know nothing but time will stop the kangaroo leaps straight up in the air, but hopefully the harness will preserve the shoulder.

Here we go again!

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-u9T-c87Y068/ToHNyR9YUFI/AAAAAAAAAF8/t-B1-Bad6kE/s320/Baxter-on-Couch.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5657028870652055634" />
I knew this day would come.
However I was beginning to believe it might not.
After all, when I would ask Baxter to come sit next to me on the couch he would back away.
Not anymore.
It’s like overnight he has decided the sofa is the only place he wants to spend time.
He is, after all a Gt. He walked into the hallway and peed.
I think we just looked at each other in amazement. Not believing what just took place. OMG!
Tonight I am on my own at doggie school. Sometimes, usually lunch, I will wet the food and put it in the fridge for later.
I am not sure this will work in the winter when it is cold outside. A sofa, hallway or who knows what.
He will come bounding and leap through the air with the greatest of ease. And fall sideways, front first … And always get up from the configuration and move on to the next adventure.
I honestly can see some of the growth spurts.
His nose will look different. And if you get up close and personal with it you might notice there is more distance between the eyes or between the eyes and the mouth. Both directions.
Or I might notice that his rear end is higher than his front end.
As always every day with the little guy is an adventure. That tires me out.
The end of the next week we will get a new weight on Baxter. It must be very hard being a puppy – especially a giant breed which takes three years to mature instead of one.
Moment by moment I can see him grow.
For instance, I can look at him and see that his nose grew. So I took advantage of the situation and took the two of them to the kennel for daycare. Certainly a good way for Baxter to get used to being boarded. And all counts said he was well adjusted. Content, going in and out the doggie door to his private patio.
Of course he came home and fell right to sleep.
Today he is acting like a demon dog. Getting into everything. Bouncing and bouncing.
Today he decided the couch in the family room was his. He has never even wanted to get on the couch until now.
Then he decided it was time to shred. He took a magazine off a counter surface and began prancing around. When I saw it he immediately began to shred it.
I could go on and on.
Bottom line -I am enjoying every puppy moment with him. The days are short compared to his adult years.

The jowls are growing – oh my!

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zdXTlgqpzWk/TjQomR5OEII/AAAAAAAAAFM/bgoUhnAfzrA/s320/jowels.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5635173671850872962" />
Yep, the reason every door knob in the house has a hand towel has begun. The slobber-producers are getting bigger every day.
And so is the soon to be cavernous mouth.
Have you ever noticed how big dogs seem to lose things inside their mouths.
I mean all of a sudden your canine is chewing on something – and he hasn’t moved in at least half an hour. Where did it come from! It was simply lost inside that huge mouth.
In about a week Baxter will be 4 months old. We will have had him just under half his lifetime. Ii doesn’t seem that long.
Knock on wood housetraining is coming along a little better. He seems to be able to hold ‘it’ longer.
I was at Pet Supplies Plus and bought one of those door bells you hang from the door knob. It’s only been a day and so far I am holding his paw to it. At least he doesn’t pull back.
Chester and Baxter are buds and can spend hours talking and rough housing. It is wonderful to see Chester enjoying his new brother.

<category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='Gt. Will it really get that big? Oh my.
Potty training is still a difficult challenge.
Sometimes it works and other times it doesn’t.
It is truly a challenge with these really hot and humid days. They said he was wonderful; had immediately gone through to the patio side and was a well-adjusted and happy puppy.
Of course I beamed as if this was a personal compliment.
However all those happy thoughts I was having about this wonderful puppy vanished once we got into the Jeep.
Once in the backseat of the Jeep Baxter started to lean on the middle armrest, something he has never done. I thought he just wanted to be close to me. Nope, he was going to the bathroom!
Fortunately not much had a chance to come out and I had a towel to mop it up. We really have made some progress with his house manners but boy is there still a long way to go.
For instance today. The weather has been hot and sticky. So we have made sure to increase Baxter’s water intake. We have also been careful to take him outside more often. But it hasn’t been enough. Sometimes he will just get up and take a step or two and start to pee.
Any suggestions on a way to get him to do that? All the time!
Today was another first for Baxter. He went walking with Chester and his buds at the Racebrook Tract. And then came home and crashed for about three hours. He couldn’t wait to lay down. Me either I admit.
It was definitely a positive experience. He will become very socialized with other animals this way.
I was at TY Maxx this afternoon and they have an animal section. What a find for only $7.99. A larger bowl with a really good gripping bottom.
Baxter has a tendency to slide his bowl around while eating. He even has a dycuem mat under it to prevent the sliding. This will be a big help.‘

Terrible twos already?

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 223px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-NFdBRTOjm7E/ThxYaCIkMWI/AAAAAAAAAEI/uKQQ66SD7gI/s320/Ears.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5628470838578917730" />
I think Baxter hated me for a couple of moments on Sunday.
Yes, hate is a strong word but if you had seen the look he gave me you would understand.
He had an ‘accident’ in his crate. It happens but he needed a bath to get rid of the smell the accident left. And if that wasn’t traumatic enough for him we decided to take his ears down since they got a little wet anyway.
As soon as we finished with his ears he got up and ran from the room. When I tried to approach him he ran from me and sulked. It took about 15 minutes before I could coax him back to me.
But seriously, he is a really good boy. At times it seemed he was really trying. When on the patio he was going over to the gate and pacing to let us know he needed to go to the play pen. And, he had never had a stool in his crate.
All of that changed when his routine, and ours for a day, changed.
We had it planned. We were heading to a concert in Danbury Monday afternoon. It would all work out. We knew when we were leaving and when we would be home. Baxter would be all right. His schedule would be maintained. After all, we were making progress.
It didn’t work out quite so.
He didn’t get fed on schedule. We were gone way longer than expected. Surprisingly his crate was clean when we got home around 11. I stayed up with him until about 12:30 a.m. so he would have some time out.
At 1:45 a.m. he started to scream. Should I ignore it? I did for about 5 minutes. It got louder and louder.
I went to him and found him surrounded by stool. We took him out, cleaned him and his crate up and put him back to bed. Went back to sleep until 4:30 a.m. and he was screaming. Back outside and back to bed until an hour later when he screamed again. The poor guy was having diarrhea.
His routine was changed and his bowels were in an uproar. Thank goodness for white rice.
He is a sensitive gentle giant.
It has taken two days of constant routine to get back on course.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://ladyjaneslessons.blogspot.com/2011/06/never-underestimate-sensitivity-of-gt.html' title='Never underestimate the sensitivity of a Gt. He is, really, in the yard with Chester and his moms as his only distractions.
In the yard he has learned the routine.
Yesterday driving to High Plains walking track Baxter was perched on the passenger seat watching everything, cocking his head when something caught his interest.
As we approached the track a tree was being chopped down on Orange Center Road opposite the track. Did I think twice about it? NO.
I got Baxter out of the car and confidently began walking. He sat and wouldn't move.
Read - Mom this is all new and strange to me. Besides - those noises scare me.With a little coaxing he reluctantly began to follow.
We did this back and forth thing for about a half hour. I was glad to be able to get him back to the car walking.
Leash training will be more of a challenge to me than I thought.
I am finding all this puppyhood stuff more of a challenge than I remembered.
And, I am not getting any younger, only older.

How many toys does it take to keep Baxter content?

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-kR3kZco6ydo/TgHVR_11UnI/AAAAAAAAADw/Z83yMKRBc90/s320/BaxToys.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5621008315106808434" />
He just keeps GROWING. Tomorrow he will be weighed again. Last Wednesday he weighed 32 pounds. I am guessing he is closer to 40 pounds. He feels like 50 pounds when I pick him up!
Yesterday he discovered the Toy Box. A collection of more than a dozen stuffed squeaky toys that we have collected over the years. He pulled every single one out and brought them over to his bed and proceeded to play with each and every one of them. It was absolutely hilarious to watch him go from one toy to the next. Some he picked up and carried around for a few minutes before moving on to the next one.
Then he collapsed and went to sleep for a few minutes.
An absolute joy to watch and love.
We are going for our first walk at the walking track at High Plains in a little bit. Doesn't everyone want to do what is right for their new addition to the family?
I saw this nice heavy weight stainless steel bowl at Petco. It has a rubberized bottom to keep it from sliding around while your pet is eating and drinking.
It LOOKED like it would be the appropriate size for a 10-week old puppy.
A week later Baxter can hardly fit his ever-growing mouth inside it.
He is growing like a weed. At least the weed isn't poison ivy!
He truly is a smart boy.
Before he is allowed to eat I have been making him sit and stay. Good lessons in self control.
Last evening he did it on his own!
This morning he needed a gentle reminder. He is also heading to his crate after eating for a little quiet time. Something Gt. Danes needs to do after eating to decrease the likelihood of bloating, a life-threatening emergency.
Leash breaking is coming along quite well. We have Dr. Tracy Johnson to thank. At the same time we let our intentions be known that we would consider a puppy if no rescue came forward. We did have some specifics, brindle in color and if an adult – one that would not intimidate poor Chester the Jester, our extremely mild-mannered Airedale.
Well, no rescues have come forward and the only person we would ever consider a puppy from recently had a litter of puppies. Last weekend we had the pleasure of meeting our soon to be new addition. In this photo he is 3 weeks old.
While we have much work to do – getting up to speed on puppy care, food, and training we also need to choose a name for our new male bundle of joy. I would prefer an Irish name. My first thought was Angus, but my spouse, Lesley is a vegetarian and thought Angus reminded her too much of red meat. Shamus was another idea but nixed as well.
We could really use some help with a name. Your help would be appreciated.

Great dane rescued from an iceberg

A VERY happy tail for a giant teddy bear.
Read on
http://www.wxyz.com/dpp/news/region/st_clair_county/great-dane-was-rescued-by-coast-guard-on-lake-huron-ice

What poison dangers are lurking in YOUR home?

I will NEVER forget my introduction to toxicities and poisonings in practice. It was a dog who had been poisoned, probably intentionally, with an herbicide known as Timic ® in the deep South. The dog died a horrible death and there was nothing we could do. Thankfully, our two most recent toxicity cases had much better outcomes and were unintentional poisonings that occurred right in their homes, a very common scenario. According to the Connecticut Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA), the solution is to look for leadership skills within the profession but also out in society as well. Using these guidelines, CVMA has chosen the “Veterinarian of the Year” and will grant the award to Dr. Donna Cobelli during the 127th Annual CVMA Meeting and Convention on February 2nd, 2011.

Dr. Cobelli is the owner of Quarry Ridge Animal Hospital; an American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) accredited veterinary practice in Ridgefield. By following the motto “We Speak Their Language”, Dr. Cobelli has crafted a state of the art veterinary hospital focused on compassion and individualized attention to each and every patient and client. As an example, it was through her vision that families of hospitalized pets can enjoy extended visits with their four-legged family members.

Beyond her practice, Dr. Cobelli also serves as the team leader for the Connecticut State Animal Response Team (CTSART) in the northwest corner of the state. “People often forget that veterinarians are a vital part of disaster and emergency response,” says Simon Flynn, Executive Director of the CVMA, “Dr. Cobelli’s willingness to take on this role and provide leadership during crisis situations is a big part of why she is being named as Veterinarian of the Year.”

Prior to Dr. Cobelli’s award, the CVMA will also award the Veterinary Health Care Team Member of the Year, Connecticut Pet of the Year and Distinguished Service Awards. Held amidst the beauty of the Mystic Aquarium, the awards and banquet will begin at 7 pm on Wednesday, February 2nd. This event is a special part of the 127th annual CVMA continuing education meeting and veterinarians from across the state will be in attendance.

DEDICATED DACHSHUND TO RECEIVE POSTHUMOUS AWARD!

Receiving an award after you’ve died is usually reserved for war heroes and generous millionaires. But, all of that may change once people hear about Bentley, the dachshund who is being honored six months after his death. The Connecticut Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) will pay tribute to Bentley during the 127th Annual CVMA Meeting on February 3rd, 2011 by bestowing him with the coveted Connecticut Pet of the Year Award.

Although many pets are revered for their unconditional love or loyalty to mankind, Bentley went above and beyond, almost from the time he was born. Owned by Letty Lee and Dr. Sig Stein of New London, Bentley’s affection for all people was readily apparent by the time he was just three years old and was awarded the AKC’s Canine Good Citizen Award.

From there, his giving nature continued to grow as he also gained certification from the re-owned Delta Society and spent the majority of his life reaching out to patients at the Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in New London as a Pet Therapy member. Through his home visits from the Hospice of Southeast Connecticut, Bentley touched many lives and often helped individuals forget their pain for a few moments.

Bentley is fondly remembered by many children of the area as well. His work as a Reading and Education Assistance dog provided the needed spark, encouraging young minds to learn.

His posthumous Pet of the Year Award will be presented to his owner, Mrs. Stein and her canine companion, Ziggy, during the CVMA Awards Banquet on Wednesday, Feb 2nd at 7 pm. Set among the tranquil surroundings of the Mystic Aquarium in Mystic, CT, the scene will be reminiscent of the peace Bentley brought to so many.

Earn a 'Good Dog' Reward

Good Dog Rewards, a new program offered by Amity Animal Rescue Fund, Inc. hopes to promote dog training classes for rescued canines. The program is open to all residents of Bethany, Orange and Woodbridge who have adopted a companion canine and graduate from an upcoming dog obedience class between April 1 to September 30. Those qualifying will receive a $50 Good Dog Reward from AARF.
AARF’s belief is that a Good Dog with manners makes a good companion. Many dogs are surrendered to shelters because of issues like jumping, barking or poor housetraining. Basic obedience classes educate owners on how to prevent these common problems. Trained canines make better family pets. If the dog is ever surrendered to a shelter, it is often the most adoptable. Classes, whether puppy kindergarten, therapy dog certification or the fast growing sport of agility, strengthen the bond between dog and their human companion.
Informational flyers can be found in the Town Clerks office at all three Town Halls. There's a Raccoon in my Chimney!".... and Other Unexpected Wildlife Problems. This discussion will take place from 7 to 8 p.m.
This entertaining yet informative presentation will focus on typical wildlife problems encountered by area resident’s and provide effective solutions. The presentation is based on Simon's 20 years of experience running a wildlife hotline for the Humane Society of the United States. During Spring and Summer, the hotline is kept busy with calls from panicked residents who find themselves face to face with a raccoon in the kitchen, a skunk under the deck, baby birds fallen from a nest, or a woodpecker tapping loudly on the house at 5 a.m. The solution to these problems can be quite simple, often requiring nothing more than a few common household tools and a basic understanding of the animal's motivation and behavioral ecology. Bring your questions!
Simon is the Field Director of the Urban Wildlife Program for the Humane Society of the United States. She is also the President of the Connecticut Wildlife Rehabilitators Association, a licensed Nuisance Wildlife Control Operator, and guest wildlife columnist for area publications. Her special expertise in resolving skunk issues led to a guest appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres show and was the basis for the popular children's book, One Smart Skunk.

On May 16 Dr. Tracy Johnson, Country Companion Veterinary Services, will discuss Dog Bites and how to prevent them from happening. This talk is geared toward children and will take place from 6 to 7 p.m.
Many dogs are given up or euthanized because they bite. Biting can happen for many reasons and if owners don't know how to read a dog's body language, they may be putting themselves or their children at risk The “Be a Tree Program” is a great way to present the information on how to interact with a dog to prevent bites." Dog bites to children are considered to be a serious public health problem by public health agencies and veterinary medical associations worldwide. Statistics show that most bites are by the family dog or other dog known to the child. Public education has an important role in reducing dog bite risk to children. Please join us for this very informative event.

On May 31 Dr. Elisa , Country Companions Veterinary Services will discuss Basic First Aid for Small Animals. The talk will take place from 7 to 8 p.m.
This discussion will cover the most common emergency situations faced by pet owners. Dr. Elisa will review the best ways to keep you and your pet safe, and what to do in the event of a medical emergency. Topics including the best way to handle animals, first aid for wounds, heatstroke, and seizures as well as basic CPR. “Annie”, One of Dr. Elisa’s family dogs, will be on hand to demonstrate first aid techniques.
All speakers will be at Woodbridge Library in the main meeting room.

It's all about the animals!

Woodbridge resident Sarah Oren stands in the lobby of the Robin I Kroogman New Haven Animal Shelter. type='text'>Great Dane saves family from fire

Kim the Great Dane proved she really is man’s best friend when a fire broke out in the kitchen of her owners’ home just north of Carlisle. The resourceful pet simply used one of her hefty paws to open a door to the family’s nearby office before entering and escaping the smoke.

Fortunately, she made so much noise wandering around that she alerted her owners, John and Anne Collier, who run the Blackdyke Farm Riding Centre at Blackford.

Anne and her husband were then able to alert the Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service and ensure the safety of their four children – teenage twins Mark and Thomas, Sarah, 15, and 11-year-old Emma – before the fire could threaten their lives.

Anne said the blaze, which started in the family’s Aga cooker on Sunday morning, has not affected the running of their swimming pool and riding business.

But the family are grateful Kim open the office door and gave them an early warning of the danger they were facing.

Anne said: “I normally get up at about 6.45am, but at 6.30am I heard Kim wandering around in the office, which is usually shut.

“I couldn’t work out why she would be in there, so I went down to investigate and found Kim in there, looking as if she thought she’d been a clever dog for opening the door.”

It was then that Anne opened the office door to the living room and was met by a “wall of smoke”.

She explained that Kim, who sleeps in the kitchen, had managed to shut the door behind her after getting into the office, thereby protecting herself and the family from the smoke.

“It has been known for her to open doors before, using her paw to push down the handle,” said Anne.

“She’s just a friendly, good, all-round dog, and she’s certainly been a best friend to this family.”
Eagle Scout project will benefit Amity animals and beyond

By Bridget Albert

John Zdrowski with one of the 55 winterized cat igloos he is constructing.
When John Zdrowski was younger he couldn’t participate in many physical activities as he was under treatment for a cardiac condition. His mother, Caterina, noticed that he was missing companionship so she took him to the local animal shelter and they found his new best friend Jake, a beautiful and loyal feline. The two were inseparable for many years.

Jake has since crossed the Rainbow Bridge and John has two other animal companions that keep him company but he has never forgotten the bond that developed with the furry feline.

And because of this fond memory John has chosen to help local animals in his Boy Scouts of America Eagle Scout Service Project.

The BSA is an organization that promotes preparedness, leadership and responsibility. Attaining the level of Eagle Scout is the highest honor afforded a boy scout. Candidates for the Eagle Scout must satisfy a number of challenges. One of the requirements for the Eagle Scout is “to plan, develop and give leadership to others in a service project”.

John’s ambitious Eagle Scout project is three-fold. He is making 55 feline igloos for feral felines. Of those 55 igloos he is creating 45 of them for Amity Animal Rescue Fund, a 501c3 local organization that supports animals in the Amity region. The other 10 igloos will be donated to Dr. Kristine Matz for use with her feral cats.

The igloos have to be insulated and John will lead his team in cutting and gluing the insulation into place.

These will be distributed to the numerous cat colonies that AARF is assisting with.

Two other projects John is working on are at the municipal animal shelter, District Animal Control, located on Bradley Road in Woodbridge. There he will be repairing some damaged fencing and replacing a door.

The 12 active Scouts in Troop 907 in Woodbridge need to raise $1,400 for the cat igloos alone and are looking for donations.

John will be completing his animal related Eagle Scout projects with the assistance of Scoutmaster Paul Konweski and Assistant Scout Master Nate Case, both Woodbridge firemen.

John said the Eagle Scout badge will be an accomplishment as he couldn’t participate in sports for a number of years due to his heart issues.

His heart is now alright and he is on the hockey team where he plays on the Milford house league.

John said donations for the project are greatly appreciated and he would prefer to receive gift cards from Lowes or Walmart where he will be purchasing his supplies. Donations can be sent to Boy Scout Troop 907, C/O Caterina Zdrowski, 60 Tumblebrook Road, Woodbridge, CT. 06525.

Why does animal abuse happen in the first place?

In the past two years a dog was kicked repeatedly causing neighbors to come to the animals defense, another dog was thrown from a car on I-95, more than 100 animals were seized from a local kennel due to neglect, a family canine was poisoned, another dog was found scalded, multiple dogs’ remains were found burned in a park and three pit bulls were found emaciated and ill near an elementary school. Kessy, a sweet, gentle, affectionate purring machine who can easily withstand sudden tail pullings by toddlers had never been out for more than a night
The skeptics among us thought she had fallen prey to a coyote, been hit by a car or catnapped because she's so nice.
But Kathleen kept believing and on Friday after school created flyers with Kessy's picture, then went around the neighborhood with her best friend Jackie to distribute them. I picked them up at dusk by the community center after distribution and as we pulled into the driveway Kathleen opened the door and jumped out of the moving car, as Jackie and i looked at each other, perplexed.
Kathleen had spotted fur in the deep grass, ran up to the cat and it turned out to be a black and white cat - not Kessy - who likes to hang out by our door. But just as Kathleen saw it wasn't Kessy, she heard a meow from behind that she recognized and all Jackie and I could see was Kathleen's elated expression (car had just stopped moving) - something usually reserved for favorite band or boyfriend.
She picked up Kessy who was atypically skittish and smelled, we decided later, like dog, cigarettes and gasoline.
The first thing I said to Jackie was "Kessy must have seen the flyer!"
Jackie chuckled and said that when they were distributing the flyers, Kathleen had said, "Maybe Kessy will see the flyer."
Anyway, I keep going over the scenarios in my head and am wondering if anyone who knows anything about cat behavior or catnapping behavior can tell me - Was it just a coincidence that she came home minutes after the last flyer was distributed? Did someone holding her captive see the flyer and let her go? Was she just out on an extended romp with the other cat (Kathleen says they're friends!)? It would be very difficult (and emotionally painful) to explain the mental rollercoaster that I have been surfing since then.
Anyway, I thought it was time to share some memories of this wonderful creature that shared our lives for many years. I first wrote this in February about a month after losing him.

Remembering One Very Loyal Friend
I remember the first time I saw Bogart; it was love at first sight. His beautiful high black face mask and deep golden color were spectacular. His feet were absolutely huge and his puppy breath was intoxicating. But I wasn’t sure he was the right great Dane for me. Driving down the road leaving the kennel I turned to my friend Mary and said something like “I want him.” She looked at me and said “I know. Call the kennel.” And the rest was history.

Bogey soon after became the most wonderful companion one could ever ask for.

He immediately took over the futon in the den calling it home. That mattress has been replaced several times during his tenure on it.

He always kept me on track with feeding times, getting up and marching into the kitchen reminding us it was dinnertime.

And when he realized it was time to go for a ‘car ride’ he would squeal with delight. In his younger days he would leap into the air.

And he had his best girls. When Pat would stop by Bogey would forget about everyone else in the room and lay at her feet. Of course that was only after she showered him with love. Lorraine was the same way. They would go out into his playpen (a 20 X 20 6-foot high fenced enclosure with pea size gravel) and have ‘personal time.” I was never allowed to know what those conversations were about.

When Bogey was about 5 years we took a vacation and he went to the kennel. As soon as we returned and brought him home he had to go back for a few more days because of a family emergency. When I brought him home again I had to go right back to work. Something inside me urged me to check on him at lunchtime. Thankfully I did. Bogey had bloated due to the stress he had been under. Bloat is a very serious lethal canine condition.

Following a week of surgery, cardiac consultations and medical melee I was faced with the difficult decision. They said there was nothing else they could do for him implying his time had come. I just couldn’t give up on him. There was a look in his eye that told me he was counting on me. I brought him home and syringed food into him all weekend. Friends came by, looked at him and just shook their heads at me not wanting to say those terrible words.

That following Monday I was on my veterinarians’ front steps when she opened. Dr. Kim, who had been on vacation during this ordeal, kept him all day. When I picked him up he was able to walk out to me and he took a biscuit from her. A true breakthrough. We all cried with relief and happiness. He was finally on the mend.

The next several years were challenging with Bogey. He had to have a very specific diet, If he ate too much it would come back up. If he did not eat enough other problems would develop.

There weren’t many vacations those years. His care was too all consuming.

And then we found the most extraordinary boarding kennel, Larkin’s Run in Durham. Bogey thrived there and they showered him with love, catering to his many special needs. They gave us peace of mind.

Last Thanksgiving we had a very special vacation in Provincetown thanks to property owners who allowed Boo to stay with us. Bogey loved having a beach and ocean water right outside his door. He absolutely loved going up to the fence and saying hello to all the people strolling the beach. Lesley too loved the property because she was able to visit with the dogs strolling. It was truly a wonderful weekend.

This past November Bogey took another turn for the worse. He was having significant problems with his rear. Losing his balance. He was also in severe pain.

With the assistance of Dr. Kim we sought out acupuncture treatments for him and found a truly compassionate veterinarian in Dr. Greg in Northford. He gave Bogey considerable relief to the point he was able to get off pain medication.

Bogey spent Christmas at Larkin’s Run one last time. In January Bogey went down hill quickly. Unable to move and in severe pain we had to make the most difficult decision one can possibly make. Bogey crossed the Rainbow Bridge to be with his buds Prudence, Lady Jane and Sophie.

The only comfort I have is knowing that my dear friend Leontine Smith is keeping a close eye on him for me up there. They are both sorely missed

Recycle For Rescue

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Go9sZW2stbY/S-1mr80TEmI/AAAAAAAAABs/mqQ6HAQ8iSo/s200/Recycle+new.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5471142027570909794" />
Orange resident and AARF volunteer Vin Russo is a local “Make an Impact in 3 Words” winner. Extremely loyal.
While I still miss him every signle day I think we are ready to consider adding a second dog back into the family.
While I know we will always find room for Peoria (at Best Friends) if she is ever ready for a home, my heart is ready for a second canine.
We have begun to look at Great Dane rescues as well as Border Collie ones. Something seems to be amiss with the Great Dane Rescue of New England as its website advises no dogs are available and no applications are being taken.
There is a wonderful Border Collie Rescue called Glen Highland Farm that seems to resemble a mini Best Friends. However it only caters to Borders and Border mixes. It also offers insightful information about the breed and what a Border Collie owner needs to be capable of.
The journey to finding another Boo has begun. Where it will take us is anyones guess.

Dachshund social

DURHAM - The 2nd Annual Durham Pet Fair, Sunday, May 16, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Coginchaug Regional High School, 135 Pickett Lane includes rescue dogs available for adoption. But one Van Alstyne woman is working hard to change all that through her own rescue efforts, and one special dog in particular.

Anita Armstrong is a local business woman, but she’s also an avid animal advocate. She has been working with animal rescue groups for years, and now on her own she tries to do her part. And luckily, one night while driving down Highway 82, she saw a wounded animal on the side of the road, so she stopped to help.

"There were lots and lots of prayers within 30 minutes of finding her to please pray for this dog because she is so broken,” said Anita. “And they were all answered, so it was that night she was named mercy."

When Anita found the Great Dane puppy mix lying in the mud on the side of the highway both of her back legs and pelvis were badly broken. The vet told her she probably wouldn't make it.

"She has been amazing, I think she's taught a lot of us ‘don’t give up,’” said Anita.

And Anita didn't give up on Mercy either, saying she knew no matter how bad Mercy was, she couldn’t put her down. She took her to an emergency veterinarian in Grayson County, and then a special treatment center in Plano.

"I knew the dog had landed in the right place; that she was going to get the help it needed,” said her good friend and fellow animal rescuer, Kathy McVean.

That help wasn't easy either, and Anita has paid roughly $9,000 of her own money on medical costs. But weeks later, after extensive surgery, almost all of Mercy's rear end is metal plates. But amazingly she’s walking again.

"She is a miracle dog, absolutely she is. I mean the way Anita found her in the ditch, it’s amazing,” said Kathy.

But Anita and Kathy, who also works for rescue group Paws in the City, said there are countless stories just like Mercy's that don't have a happy ending.

"These babies have no voice, and they need all of us to be their guardian,” said Anita.

They said one of the best ways to help is have your pets spayed and neutered, and always give them the care they deserve.

"They need help just like anything else and we need to step in when they need help,” said Kathy.

And while Anita can't keep Mercy forever, she knows this puppy will give someone else the love that Mercy has shown her.

"She has 14 years to give someone more joy than they can ever imagine, so that's what we're looking for, for someone to love her,” said Anita.

“Paws in the City” is assisting in the adoption of Mercy, along with many other rescued dogs and cats. For more information, go to their website: www.pawsinthecity.org.

There has also been an account to help out with Mercy’s high medical bills. It’s set up as the “Friends of Mercy” account at Wells Fargo Bank.

The Not So Ugly Duckling

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 129px; height: 200px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Go9sZW2stbY/S88GUWZ7wuI/AAAAAAAAABk/O4HrHMR2_jw/s200/Siegel.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5462591819705205474" />
By Bernie Siegel, M.D.
The other day I was sitting on our back porch, enjoying the sun, when a bedraggled little duck startled me with a big splash as he crash landed in the little pond I had built in our backyard. As he settled down and tried to catch his breath I noticed his feathers were pointing in all directions. I continued to watch as our rabbit Smudge hopped over to the pond and struck up a conversation.
“Hi, my name is Smudge. If you are looking for a place to rest you landed in the right place. Can I get you something to eat? You look tired and hungry.”
“I could use a bite to eat and a few moments to catch my breath.”
When Smudge gave me the sign I went to our food bin and brought some bird seed and corn over and then went back and sat down so I wouldn’t frighten his new friend.
“That helped. Thank you.”
“Happy to help. Bobbie and Bernie, the couple who live here, rescued me and my sister Snowflake two years ago. They have big hearts and a house full of animals they love. We all have stories to tell; what’s yours?”
“When I popped out of the egg before I was expected my mom started telling me that she was disappointed in me from day one because I was so small and had weird looking feathers. She said she was tired of explaining things to people and hiding me. She kept telling me what a disappointment I was to her and my dad. Whenever they talked about me they called me the ugly duckling. They were breaking my heart so I decided to run away. I’m an ugly duckling with no place to run to.”
“Well you have a place now. You stay right here while I tell everyone about you and we’ll get you moved into our bird sanctuary where you’ll get to meet the other ducks and geese who live here. Not to mention all the other creatures we have rescued who have learned we are all family.”
“Why are you being so nice when you don’t even know me?”
“Dear Doctor Bernie has taught us that we are all wounded and have our share of troubles. He’s a surgeon and says we are all one family, the same color inside, so we try to serve one another. He’s our CD and Bobbie is our CM; they stand for Chosen Dad and Chosen Mom. I know someone whose childhood was a lot like yours except for one thing that made all the difference in the world to him. Would you like to hear a story? It may help you to understand and change how you see yourself.”
“Sure. I’m definitely not going anywhere.”
“Once upon a time there was a young woman who was told not to become pregnant because she was very sick and had lost a lot of weight. Her doctor felt becoming pregnant might endanger her life. She and her husband followed the doctor’s advice but her mother wouldn’t accept it. She told her daughter to lie down on the couch and she started feeding her all through the day. Well in time the woman gained thirty pounds and went ahead and became pregnant.
“Things went reasonably well until the time when the baby was due. You showed up too soon while this duckling seemed like he had no interest in ever coming out. Weeks went by and finally his mom went into labor but after several days he still didn’t show his little head. I think it was his big head that was the problem but don’t tell anyone I told you that.
“His mom was going through a lot of pain and the doctor said he really needed to get her baby out but she wasn’t well enough to risk a cesarean section so they reached way up inside and pulled the baby out. Then the fun began. His mom said when she saw him she thought, they didn’t give me a baby they gave me a purple melon. So she and the baby’s dad wrapped him in kerchiefs and put him in a covered carriage so no one would see him and when they got home they hid his carriage behind the house and covered all the mirrors.”
“Boy, I know how he must have felt. “
“But there was one big difference between his family and yours. He never considered running away from home. Can you guess why?”
“No.”
“Think about it. He had what you didn’t have; a grandmother and he was her grandchild. She saw the beauty that parents haven’t learned how to see. It’s not their fault and I am not blaming anyone. It’s about life and what they have experienced. Hey, the next generation becomes great grandchildren so it is definitely about what we learn from our experience.”
“I’m sure you know by now that the ugly duckling with a grandmother was Bernie. Bernie’s mom said her mother took him and poured oil over him many times a day and massaged and pushed things back where they belonged. Bernie said as he grew up whenever he worried about how he looked he’d always go to his grandma for a hug. Finally when he was old enough to go to school for the first time he went to his grandma and said, “I don’t know how I look. There are no full length mirrors in our house.”
She answered, “Come over here, look into my eyes and you will see how beautiful you are.” Bernie didn’t need plastic surgery or to do what the ugly duckling and you did, run away from home. You won’t have to struggle to see by your reflection that you are beautiful because you will see that in our eyes. Bernie’s grandma has taught us all a few things though Bernie’s wife Bobbie did insist upon having a mirror by their front door. So his grandmother hung a sign across the top of it that says, “Come and see how beautiful and meaningful life is.”
“So whenever anyone is having a bad day and grandma isn’t around we just go and stand in front of grandma’s mirror.”
“Now I want you to start working on what the original ugly duckling did. He quieted his mind and didn’t let his mother’s rejection become the focus of his life. With a quiet mind one can focus upon and quiet one’s life and the direction it is taking and look what happens then? His quiet mind and the still water of his life allowed him to see his true beauty and that he was a swan, not an ugly duckling. Don’t ever forget we are all swans and divine creations.”

Animal friendly products make a difference

It haunts me to think about all the animals that have lost their lives to research. The graphic images are burned into my mind forever.
Over the years I have stopped using personal care products including cosmetics as well as household products that have been tested on animals. Such products can be found locally or online. (See links on the sidebar).
It really isn’t that difficult. I have found locally face products that are much better – and less expensive – that have made quite a difference in my complexion to the point that when I see someone who hasn't seen me in a while they marvel at how good my skin looks. (You can only go so far without plastic surgery!) I use Eminence, a Hungarian company and every product states that no animal testing was done. Locally this product can be found at Inner Essence Spa and Wellness Center in Orange.
There are also plenty of personal care products that are cruelty free as well from deodorant to body scrubs to toothpaste and everywhere in between that are skin sensitive and do a fine job for their intended purpose.
I used to think that household products made by earth friendly companies were cruelty free. However, when shopping for these at local health food stores I started reading the product labels and was surprised to not find the simple statement that animals were not used for testing purposes. Researching further on the product websites there wasn’t any statement about not testing on animals there either. There were plenty of statements talking about corporate responsibility and saving the earth but nothing about saving or respecting animals.
While I am only one household committed to using products not tested on animals if we all just started replacing one item at a time animals would slowly stop becoming a laboratory statistic.
Join me.

Rabies, microchip clinic

Amity Animal Rescue Fund and Country Companions Veterinary Services will host a rabies and micro chipping clinic on May 15, 1 to 3 p.m. at Country Companions location, 9 Amity Road, Bethany. She touched our lives so deeply.

I came across this photo of Peoria and my heart stopped after reading her sad story. If you are inclined to believe in reincarnation Peoria did it for me. Another Lady Jane.

According to her profile she was found in an Arizona junkyard wandering around with a pack of feral dogs. And somebody had been shooting at them. She tends to bark and freeze when you pet her too. And she is not suited to be around children either.

I immediately started to cry and picked up the phone to learn more about her. She was not ready for adoption.

Of course I didn’t give up on her but adopted her online with a donation in her honor. I have continued to do this and have kept up with her progress. Best Friends sent me this photo of her. Isn’t she special?

Earlier this year we lost another wonderful companion (another post) and I thought if there was ever a reason to lose someone it was to give someone else a chance. I filled out the adoption application for Peoria only to learn she still was not ready for her forever home yet. And she is older now and we would have had to drive to Best Friends. I am certainly up to that task when she is ready.

It is heartening to know that there are organizations such as Best Friends who truly care for and don’t give up on animals.

When you call there they talk to you and answer all your questions. If you have a behavior question, they will try to offer you advice. More than three quarters said they would rather take their dog for a walk than go to the gym.
A total of 86 per cent said they enjoyed taking their pet out each day, with just 22 per cent saying they sometimes see it as a chore.
But only 16 per cent of respondents said they enjoyed exercising in the gym, while almost 70 per cent considered it a chore.
The survey showed that having a dog to walk actually encourages regular exercise with 60 per cent of pet owners saying they always go for a walk with their dog – even when time is precious.
But 46 per cent of gym goers admit they often find other things to do to get out of doing exercise.
"With increasing focus on leading an active healthy lifestyle it seems that owning a dog makes us more healthy," the Bob Martin spokesperson said.
"The Government recommends 30 minutes of moderate cardio vascular exercise 3-5 times per week and it's encouraging to see that dog walkers are exceeding this target and enjoying it at the same time."

Spay/Neuter Now Program Available

Amity Animal Rescue Fund, Inc. has introduced a spay/neuter program for Bethany, Orange and Woodbridge felines. And she was VERY pregnant. We were volunteering at the animal shelter at the time when Animal Control brought her in. She was frightened to death and snarling at everyone who came into her view. Although she was pregnant, it was obvious she had not had a good meal in some time.
During her tenure at the shelter it became obvious that she had no tolerance for felines. In fact we learned she was to be put down because of this intolerance. And thankfully, the animal control officer let us rescue Lady Jane. We hoped to find her a home as we had a feline, Prudence, who already ruled our lives.
For the next seven years, we kept Lady (AKA Border) and Prudy apart. Each taking their turn at ruling the house. During the day Lady Jane enjoyed her downstairs condo while Prudy had the run of the house. In the evenings, it was just the opposite.
Lady blossomed living with us. She developed a beautiful silky coat that was hard to keep your hands off of. And she was defiantly loyal. Constantly looking out for us.
One time when out for a car ride we went into New Haven for some reason. We left her in the car while we ran an errand. When I approached the car and put the key in the lock I heard, before I saw her, a deep warning growl. It was not until I alerted her it was me that she gave me an apologetic lick, as if saying “Sorry Ma, I was just protecting.”
Over the years, there were many such episodes, always with Lady Jane having our best interest at heart.
And then one day, when her dark muzzle had turned grey she developed a lump on the top of her head. After learning from a biopsy that the lump was indeed cancerous we opted to keep her as comfortable as possible. She was grateful I think that we didn’t put her through the chemotherapy regime. Eventually the day came when I had to carry her into Dr. Kim’s office. As her suffering was coming to an end I stroked her beautiful silky coat and thanked her for coming into our lives.
